IP Pageant Entry::Gemstones

Phew....

Was just barely able to get this done in time. This month's been hectic trying to find time for art between my new job and school, which have been sapping all my energy. A very special thanks to my buds KeepYerCoolGreenBean and Zerna for spurring me to whip something out for this round.

Anyway, excuses aside, this entry turned out a bit...darker than my original idea. While researching my theme, I found myself getting sucked into all the lore behind all the gemstones, so I couldn't help but incorporate a bit of symbolism into the piece as well. 

I decided to go with mother of pearl, which is the iridescent coating formed inside a mollusk to protect itself from irritants. In some cultures, it symbolizes motherly love and protection over children, so I thought part of that aspect would tie in with Kri nicely -- with a bit of imbalance as Kri struggles to shield her child from the harshness of reality, while at the same time compromising a foundation of trust with her daughter (shown as a disintegrating island of sand)
